It helps webmasters and publishers get their content found and indexed<br \/>\non the search engine.<\/p>\n<p>With the release of the new Bing Webmaster Guidelines, the company is committing to<br \/>\nbeing a webmaster-friendly service that puts their needs at the top-of-mind, and<br \/>\nalthough the Guidelines aren\u2019t much different than Google\u2019s, they do provide a great<br \/>\nrefresher on what how Bing crawls, ranks and indexes sites.<\/p>\n<p><em>Let\u2019s take a look at some important points:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Content<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Webmasters must provide \u201cclear, deep, easy to find content\u201d on their sites that make it<br \/>\nmore likely to be found, and ultimately indexed and shown in search results. This also<br \/>\nincludes images, white papers and videos, among other types. Rich, content-heavy<br \/>\nsites that engage users and provide valuable and refreshed information are always the<br \/>\nmost sought after.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Social<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bing frequently points to social sharing signals as a major way that the search engine<br \/>\nmeasures influence. And since Facebook has significantly more users than Google+,<br \/>\nBing may very well become the standard search engine for socially inclined search<br \/>\nresults.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indexation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bing explains that the best ways to be indexed by the search engine is to either link<br \/>\nyour content to Bing or use features that come with the Bing Webmaster Tools (e.g.<br \/>\nSubmit URL or Sitemap Upload) to make them aware of your content.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Technical<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This section of the Bing Webmaster Guidelines examines a variety of different<br \/>\nstructural aspects of a website that can affect how they are crawled, indexed and<br \/>\neventually ranked on Bing\u2019s SERPs. These include page load time, robots.txt, sitemaps,<br \/>\nsite technology, redirects and canonical tags.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Search Engine Optimization<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The section directly distinguishes the key areas to put emphasis on when optimizing<br \/>\ntheir websites, which include title tags, meta description tags, alt tags, &lt;h1&gt; tags,<br \/>\ninternal links, outbound links, social sharing, \u201ccrawlability\u201d (i.e. XML sitemaps,<br \/>\nrobots.txt, navigational structure, URL structure, etc.), site structure (i.e. links, clean<br \/>\nURLs, content hierarchy, etc.) and rich media.<\/p>\n<p>It also breaks down specific on-page SEO information about head copy, body copy,<br \/>\nanchor text, content and links. For instance, it suggests using unique, relevant titles and<br \/>\ndescriptions that are around 65 and 160 characters, respectively. The Guidelines also<br \/>\ninform webmasters that they should only use one &lt;h1&gt; tag per page, base their content<br \/>\non keyword research, don\u2019t use images to house content, use targeted keywords as<br \/>\nanchor text to support other internal pages, use \u201crel=canonical\u201d tags to help engines<br \/>\nunderstand which pages they should index and much more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tactics To Avoid<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bing Webmaster Guidelines also mention a handful of different tactics that webmasters<br \/>\nshould avoid.
